Week 4: MENTOR/COACH: This week, we will focus on a coach (next week, the mentor!)
You might be asking yourself: Do I need a coach or a mentor?
Coaching focuses on task and performance. Your coach will set new goals for you and assess your performance against those goals. A mentor, on the other hand, builds your capability. A good mentor will help you discover your own wisdom. In summary, when you are mentored, you set your own goals. When being coached, the coach will set goals for you.
To open up limitless possibilities, regardless of whether you decide on a coach or mentor, make sure you get someone on your team to guide and inspire you to see a different version of the world and a better, stronger, braver version of you.
You become like the people with whom you spend the most time. The influence of those around us is incredibly powerful! Often, we don't realise we're strongly affected because influences can be subtle and happen slowly over an extended period.
Evaluate anyone who can influence you in any way. Ask yourself, what do I do when I am with them? What do they want me to listen to? Do they have me reading anything? If so, what kind of things? Do they change or challenge the way I think? How do I talk when I am around them? How do I think and feel when I am with them? How do I feel about their company? What am I saying when I can hear their voice coming out of my mouth?
People can nudge us off course a little at a time until, finally, we find ourselves asking, how did I get here?
Be mindful of what influences you allow into your life. The people we associate with are one of the most significant ways we shape our lives. Find people and information that will nurture you and give you what you need to move forward on your journey.
One of the defining moments in my life was when I got a coach. I imagine you raising an eyebrow thinking ‘why would I hire someone to tell me what to do? Isn't that why I started my own business in the first place, to avoid that?'
Coaches are not bosses. Coaches are knowledge-building experts who provide layers of value to the small business owner. They can spot your weak points, give objective counsel, and hold you accountable to your self-defined goals. Our coaches have been invaluable in morphing my entrepreneurial life and enabling me to grow our business endeavours.
Your coach should have an empowering, energising influence on you. Their role is to keep nudging you onto a new course until that becomes your new reality. Your coach needs to be someone who has achieved the level of success you would like to meet because they know what it takes to get there. They will be able to guide you and encourage you as you head towards that destination. Find a coach who understands you and your business and that you are comfortable with, but also one that will push you too. You need someone to challenge you, hiring someone who agrees with you all the time won't produce the results you seek.
Your coach will not always be easy on you. They need to push you out of your comfort zone and set you tasks you are not accustomed to doing. Here is where the real growth happens. Just as you can't see the picture when you are standing in the frame, your coach can see more in you than you can see in yourself. The coaching relationship is aligned around helping you to succeed, which gives your coach the freedom to be honest and helpful.
Working with a coach forces you to talk about and focus on nothing other than you, your challenges, your opportunities, your goals. I have many friends who would happily listen to me if I asked, but many don't understand my business. Their support is appreciated but doesn’t help me with problem-solving. Having a savvy coach in my corner gives needed perspective, from someone whose input is relevant.

Hands down one of my favorite Robert Kiyosaki books.
It breaks down the typical unknown concepts of the financial world, translates it for those who normally talk "deer-in-headlights" language, and gives out an idea of the world that you could be missing.
Average people who keep working for average wages and getting average lifestyles will stay in between the average-everything, because they've got an average thinking. This book shows you how to shake up your thinking. It suggests good habits and creative thinking and prompts anyone to start a new life.
